While people often flock to Greece during the summer to enjoy its warm weather, planning your visit in autumn is also a great idea. From September to November, Greece’s temperature has average highs between 23-19°C and average lows between 16-3°C. That makes a great environment for exploring historical sites, going museum-hopping, and trying different restaurants without discomfort from the heat. When it comes to packing I created a list of some capsule wardrobe essentials for your autumn trip to Greece.

Of course, even holidays in Greece during this season will likely involve island-hopping across the country’s 227 inhabited islands. After all, it would be a shame if you didn’t take advantage of accessible ferries to visit the pink sand beaches, blue waters, and countless swimming spots scattered across this Mediterranean locale—and doing so in autumn won’t detract from your experience so much as add to it since there’ll be fewer tourists around.

If you’re planning to do all these things and more on an autumn trip to Greece, it’s essential to pack light. You don’t need to worry about sacrificing style, though. That’s where capsule wardrobes come in. By selecting versatile pieces, you can create different looks while keeping a light load. With that said, here are some capsule wardrobe essentials for your autumn trip to Greece:

A loose blouse

Since autumn falls between the summer and winter, it’s best to pack clothes that suit warm and cold weather. A loose blouse with three-fourths or long sleeves will keep you cool on warmer days and shield you from light breezes in the evening. Go for those with lighter colours, like white or cream, so they pair well with different bottoms. Such blouses will be versatile enough to wear on various occasions, from casual Greek explorations to formal evenings spent with your partner at fancier restaurants.

A maxi skirt

Since maxi skirts are long enough to cover you up to your ankles, they’re perfect for visiting various tourist attractions—like churches—with stricter dress codes. They can also keep you warm as the nights get colder while providing enough space to prevent you from overheating during the day. Choose one made of material like denim so it can pair well with many colours and fabrics. That way, you can take notes from Vogue’s take on denim maxi skirts and style them in countless ways to suit your preferences—like wearing them with a tank top, a turtleneck sweater, or even a simple crop top. That’ll make it easier to reuse your maxi skirt during the trip.

A chunky sweater

Sweaters are adaptable: you can layer one over a shirt or under a coat. Yet chunky ones are the best kind to bring along on an autumn holiday in Greece. The thicker material will surely shield you from the cold—and, as we note in our post ‘How To Style Chunky Sweater’ you can layer it over a turtleneck or under a blazer for additional warmth without sacrificing style. Such outfits will go well with a number of bottom and shoe combinations, from slacks and pumps to trousers and trainers. If you’re packing more dark-coloured bottoms, it’s better to pack a light-coloured sweater—maybe grey or beige—for a more stunning contrast.

A shawl

A shawl can be worn like a scarf to warm your neck, around your shoulder to cover your back, and even on your head to shield you from rain or shine. It’s also perfect to bring around Greece when wearing a sleeveless top, so you can use it to cover up when you’re chilly or visiting tourist attractions that also serve as places of worship. You can even use it as a swimsuit cover-up at the beach. If you’re more creative, you can turn a simple shawl into a top or skirt by tying it around your torso or hips. Should most of your clothes be plain, pack a patterned shawl to add colour and texture to your outfits.
